How do I go about ordering a memorial?
Before purchasing a memorial consider the following:
- Check to see if your cemetery has any restrictions on size and shape of
monument. For example, some cemeteries only allow flat markers and not upright
monuments.
- Be sure to gather any pertinent information such as birthdate(s), deathdate(s)
and correct spelling of all names to be placed on the monument.
- Find out what kinds of fees cemeteries have such as setting the monument etc.
- Think about designs and wording you would like to have on the monument. It helps
to have more than one idea in case your original design will not work.
When is it proper to order a memorial?
There is no "proper" time to order a memorial. One should order a memorial when
he/she is comfortable dealing with this decision.
Should I use years only or month, day and year?
You may not be interested in genealogy but someone generations down your lineage
may be. Including full dates allows for verification that the memorial marks the
resting place of the person they are looking for.
How long does it take to complete a memorial?
It generally takes two weeks to complete a memorial on granite that is in stock.
Special orders such as a photo of the deceased, custom design, or custom shape
stone will take some more time.
Why should I buy a memorial in advance?
Many people choose to purchase a monument before the need arises. By planning
ahead one can select precisely what they want and relieve family members of
making arrangements later.
What type of material must the memorial be made of?
Some cemeteries require all the memorials be made of bronze or granite. There
are some sizes and shapes made in marble but it is not recommended for most
cemeteries. Check with your cemetery to see if any restrictions apply.
Who installs the memorials?
Some cemeteries require that their personnel install your memorial.
There is usually a fee for this. Other cemeteries may not have any requirements.
If there are no requirements and the monument is small enough for one or two
people to carry then it is fine to install the monument your self.
We recommended you allow AM&E to install larger and heavier monuments for your safety.
